Domain Names 101

• A website name uses a Registered Domain Name for a website address/URL/URI of http://www.example.com the Registered Domain name is "example.com".
• You can't just go out and call your website "whateveryoulike.anything". There are rules and it just does not work unless the rules are followed.
• Every website has to have a unique domain name. For instance, example.com and example.net are different. EXAMPLE.com and example.com are the same because Domain Names are case-insensitive.
• Only letters and numbers (as well as hyphen -) are allowed. No spaces, no other characters.
• The maximum length of a Domain Name is 63 characters, so for a single Top Level Domain (TLD), for instance ".net" the number of possible Domain Names is something like 6 followed by 98 zeros.
• Top Level Domains (TLDs) are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) often have specific requirements depending on the country administering the ccTLD.
